Farewell, Marcell!

Jansen opts for Hamburg switch

27.08.2008

With the summer transfer deadline looming, a further change has taken place in the Bayern first team squad. After just a single season in Munich, Marcell Jansen is leaving the champions for Hamburger SV, where he will sign a five-year contract binding him to the northern club until 30 June 2013.

The clubs agreed a deal for the 22-year-old left-back, who moves north for an undisclosed fee. Jansen will undergo a medical on Thursday ahead of an immediate official unveiling in Hamburg. He will therefore play no part in Bayern’s meeting with Hertha Berlin at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

Hampered by injury

Germany regular Jansen switched to Munich in summer 2007 from his boyhood club Borussia Monchengladbach, making 17 Bundesliga, ten UEFA Cup and three DFB Cup appearances for the Bavarians. His progress was interrupted by a three-month lay-off with a serious ankle injury before Christmas.

A series of minor injuries meant an incomplete pre-season for the left-sided player, although he made coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s matchday squad for the first two Bundesliga fixtures without ever coming off the bench.

However, the 22-year-old has at least fulfilled a heartfelt wish he expressed on joining FCB last summer: “There’s something I’ve never had with Gladbach: away wins. That would be pretty good.“
