DFB Cup 1st round

Bayern handed tough trip to Burghausen

01.07.2007

Bayern’s route to a possible 14th DFB German Cup triumph begins with a tough-looking trip to Lower Bavaria, nestling between the Czech Republic and Austria to the east of the state. The draw for the first round proper, made on national TV on Saturday night, has paired the competition’s most successful club with SV Wacker Burghausen, relegated from the second division last term.

German Women’s international keeper Silke Rottenberg made the draw and kept watching Bayern fans in a state of suspense, as Munich was the last of the 64 names to emerge from the hat. Third division Burghausen, to be coached by former Schalke and Dortmund star Ingo Anderbrügge next season, benefited from an automatic home tie, in common with all the teams from outside the top two divisions.

The all-Bavarian clash will take place on 4 or 5 August, a full week before Bundesliga matchday 1. Because of next summer’s Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, the DFB Cup final has been brought forward to 19 April 2008, four weeks before the last Bundesliga matchday, at the customary venue of the Berlin Olympic stadium.
