Chelsea v Bayern

Reaction to Champions League draw

18.03.2005

Bayern have landed a plum tie in the Champions League quarter-finals with a clash against Premier League leaders Chelsea. The clubs will meet for the very first time in their combined 205-year history over two exciting and dramatic European evenings in early April.

Both Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß were delighted at what the senior managers regard as the best possible draw for their club. "We're not favourites, which doesn't happen very often. But we revel in these situations." Hoeneß declared. Felix Magath was determinedly upbeat: "Now is the right time to beat Chelsea."

Reaction to Champions League quarter-final draw:

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: "It's exactly the draw I wanted. No-one will regard us as favourites, but that's what makes the tie with Chelsea so special. It's a huge challenge, although it's a real advantage to play in London first and then have the second leg at the Olympic stadium."

Uli Hoeneß: "Chelsea, and the first game away - that's exactly the draw I wanted. We're not favourites, which doesn't happen very often. But we revel in these situations. Obviously Chelsea are a quality team, but against Arsenal we've shown we can rise to the task. It's a tremendous draw for Bayern."

Felix Magath: "I was convinced we'd get Lyon but I can more than live with Chelsea. I went there last year with Stuttgart and we came away with a goalless draw, so I know what to expect. Three months ago we'd have sunk without trace against Chelsea, but fortunately we've had the winter break to recharge our batteries. Now is the right time to beat Chelsea."

Roy Makaay: "It's the most difficult draw we could have had apart from AC Milan. It'll be immensely tough because Chelsea have a fantastic team. We have a small advantage in that we play the first leg away."

Owen Hargreaves: "It's an extremely good draw and we'll see two fantastic games. You always want to take on the best in the Champions League. Everyone rates Chelsea favourites for the trophy at the moment, so this is the perfect challenge for Bayern Munich. I reckon we have the edge because we go there for the first game."

Bastian Schweinsteiger: "I put down €20 in the dressing room on us getting Chelsea so I've got lucky. Obviously Mr Abramovich's money has bought Chelsea a superb team who keep up an incredible tempo. The 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the last round was absolutely top-class. But if we play like we did against Arsenal we'll make the semi-finals. I certainly think we have a better chance against Chelsea than if we'd drawn an Italian club."

Claudio Pizarro: "Chelsea! It will be incredibly tough. But I reckon we'll get through. Bayern have always done well against English teams in the past."
